JUNE 11, 2018 - Portland, OR: With the Chico Heat off to a great start this season, the team has a number of players performing well. The GWL Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week both come from the Heat, as catcher Parke Phillips and hurler Shane Gustafson both had a big week.
Phillips, a 20-year-old who just completed his sophomore season at Brown University, went 12-25 (.480) with not only a dozen hits, but four walks in six games. The 5-10, 175 pound right-handed hitter from Venice, Florida leads the GWL in hitting with a .444 average. Phillips appeared in 26 games this spring for Brown and hit .329.
Gustafson, a 6-5, 185 pound right-hander from Rocklin, California, made two starts during the week, gaining a victory and allowing only 1 run and 8 hits over 12 innings. Along the way he struck out 13, while allowing only 2 walks. The Folsom Lake College product had a stellar outing at Lincoln on June 10th, working 6 innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits, fanning 10 Potters and not walking anyone. This spring Gustafson pitched in 19 games for Folsom Lake, crafting a 7-3 record and a 1.55 ERA.
